Description

The SILVA 102B/H Compass is a high stability, bulkhead-mounted compass specifically designed for sailboats and yachtsmen who demand absolute accuracy. It provides a steady card in all conditions and heeling angles, making it suitable for sailing boats, motor sailing vessels, and larger motor yachts. The compass allows for up to 45° heeling and unlimited tilting fore and aft, ensuring reliable performance even in challenging conditions.

This compass features a 100 mm capsule, a gimballed cradle, and a direct reading scale on the vertical edge. The front heeling scale allows for easy tracking of the heeling angle. Additionally, the built-in red illumination facilitates night navigation. The gimballed lubber lines remain vertical even if the boat is heeling (up to 45°), and the two extra lubber lines at 45° offset enable reading from the rail or an off-steering position.

Constructed from all UV resistant materials, the compass capsule is filled with UV resistant liquid to prevent burn effects. The optional compensator is easy to fit in a holder under the detachable front, which also covers the mounting screws. The template matches Contest 101 and 100, and a white protection cover is included.

SILVA Quality ensures durability and excellent readability. The capsule bowl is made from clear and scratch-resistant acrylic, and the combination of a sapphire jewel bearing and a hardened steel pivot minimizes friction, resulting in rapid and accurate movements. The no-spin compass card is designed for perfect dampening and exact reading, providing reliable performance even in rough seas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the SILVA 102B/H Compass maintain accuracy during heeling?

The SILVA 102B/H Compass maintains accuracy during heeling through its gimballed cradle and no-spin compass card. This design allows the compass to remain stable and readable even when the boat is heeling up to 45 degrees. The gimballed lubber lines ensure that the compass card stays level, providing consistent readings regardless of the boat's angle. This feature is crucial for sailors who need reliable navigation in varying sea conditions.

What makes the SILVA 102B/H Compass suitable for night navigation?

The built-in red illumination of the SILVA 102B/H Compass makes it ideal for night navigation. Red lighting is used because it preserves night vision better than other colors, allowing sailors to read the compass without impairing their ability to see in the dark. This feature is particularly beneficial for long voyages where navigation must continue uninterrupted through the night.

How does the SILVA 102B/H Compass handle rough sea conditions?

The SILVA 102B/H Compass is designed to perform reliably in rough sea conditions thanks to its high-stability features. The no-spin card and the sapphire jewel bearing with a hardened steel pivot minimize friction and allow for rapid, accurate movements. This ensures that the compass remains stable and provides precise readings even when the vessel is subjected to turbulent waters.

What materials are used in the construction of the SILVA 102B/H Compass?

The SILVA 102B/H Compass is constructed from UV-resistant materials to ensure durability and longevity. The compass capsule is made from clear and scratch-resistant acrylic, which protects it from the harsh marine environment. Additionally, the UV-resistant liquid filling prevents burn effects, maintaining the compass's readability and performance over time.

Can the SILVA 102B/H Compass be used on motor yachts?

Yes, the SILVA 102B/H Compass is suitable for use on motor yachts as well as sailboats. Its bulkhead-mounted design and ability to handle unlimited tilting fore and aft make it versatile for different types of vessels. The compass's stability and accuracy are beneficial for motor yachts that may experience varying speeds and directional changes.

What is the purpose of the optional compensator in the SILVA 102B/H Compass?

The optional compensator in the SILVA 102B/H Compass is used to correct for magnetic deviation. Magnetic deviation occurs when the compass is influenced by nearby magnetic fields, such as those from metal structures on the boat. The compensator can be easily fitted under the detachable front, allowing sailors to adjust the compass for more accurate navigation.

How does the SILVA 102B/H Compass ensure readability from different positions?

The SILVA 102B/H Compass features two extra lubber lines at a 45° offset, allowing for readability from the rail or an off-steering position. This design ensures that the compass can be read accurately from various positions on the boat, which is particularly useful when the steering position is not directly aligned with the compass. This flexibility is crucial for maintaining accurate course readings in different sailing conditions.

What are the benefits of the gimballed cradle in the SILVA 102B/H Compass?

The gimballed cradle in the SILVA 102B/H Compass provides stability and accuracy by allowing the compass to remain level despite the boat's movements. This feature is particularly beneficial in rough seas or when the boat is heeling, as it prevents the compass card from spinning erratically. The gimballed design ensures that the compass remains functional and reliable, even under challenging conditions.

How does the SILVA 102B/H Compass compare to other models like the Contest 101 and 100?

The SILVA 102B/H Compass shares a template with the Contest 101 and 100, making it compatible with similar mounting setups. However, the 102B/H offers enhanced features such as a larger 100 mm capsule and additional lubber lines for better readability from various angles. These enhancements make it particularly suitable for larger vessels and those requiring precise navigation in diverse conditions.

What maintenance is required for the SILVA 102B/H Compass to ensure its longevity?

To ensure the longevity of the SILVA 102B/H Compass, regular maintenance is recommended, especially in marine environments. This includes cleaning the acrylic capsule with a soft cloth to prevent scratches and checking the integrity of the UV-resistant liquid. It's also advisable to periodically inspect the gimballed cradle and lubber lines for wear and tear, ensuring that the compass remains accurate and functional over time.
