Description

Kappler’s patented, chemical-resistant ChemTape® is a PPE necessity. It provides critical reinforcement by sealing the gaps, referred to as “interfaces,” where your hazmat suit meets your gloves, boots, and the edge of your respirator or gas mask facepiece. It helps to maintain a near airtight environment inside your suit while allowing you to stay mobile. ChemTape® is easy to use, highly effective and has a practically unlimited shelf life when stored in proper conditions.

Key Features of Kappler ChemTape®:

  • Patented protective tape with a polyisoprene-based (rubber) adhesive
  • Protects against splashes, aerosolized threats, and exposure to particulates at the vulnerable interfaces in your PPE gear
  • Compatible with level A, B, and C garments
  • Compatible with NFPA garments
  • Can be applied and removed without damaging reusable protective garments
  • Each roll is 60 yards long and 2” wide. Rolls are packaged individually.
  • High-visibility yellow is ideal for dangerous situations and easy visual identification
  • Tested in accordance with ASTM F739, demonstrating a holdout time of at least 160 minutes against the entire battery of the ASTM F1001 list of 15 liquids.
  • Tested per MIL-STD-282 against chemical warfare agents Nerve (VX), Sarin (GB), and Mustard (HD) with a minimum holdout time of 8 hours.
  • Manufactured in the USA

Technical Specifications:

Kappler ChemTape® is designed specifically for use with protective apparel.

Ideal for taping around gloves, boots, respirators, and storm flaps, ChemTape® can also be used as a means of identification thanks to its high-visibility yellow color, as well as for shelter-in-place applications. It’s even suitable for pipe sealing and shelter or tent repair.

ChemTape® is primarily designed to enhance the liquid holdout of interfaces and closures on protective garments. It can also reduce the potential of gross liquid flow at interfaces. It should NOT be relied upon to provide a liquid-tight seal, but it can dramatically improve protection from liquid threats, splashes, aerosols, and particulates.

ChemTape® is 2 inches wide with pressure-sensitive adhesive, ensuring wide and direct coverage when applied, with only the tape’s flat edge exposed to airborne threats that could degrade the adhesive. Once applied, it will remain firmly adhered yet can be removed without damaging reusable protective garments.

ChemTape® provides exceptional protection from a full battery of chemical, biological, and gas threats.

Application:

Kappler ChemTape® should be stored according to the storage directions below until needed. ChemTape® performance is largely dictated by its proper application, so take care during this process. Before application, make a general measurement of the area to be taped. Wherever possible, use a single strip of tape instead of multiple patches. Unroll the ChemTape® while taking care not to wrinkle or fold it. Apply with an especially high degree of force as the adhesive is pressure-sensitive, and ensure the entire width of the tape adheres to the desired area. Inspect after application. If applied correctly, ChemTape® will be relatively flat without wrinkles or folds.

Storage:

Store Kappler ChemTape® in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The ideal storage temperature is 73ºF (23ºC). According to the manufacturer, there is no evidence that ChemTape® loses its protective characteristics, including adhesion, when stored in ideal conditions. ChemTape® may be stored at temperatures of up to 120ºF (49ºC). Note that high temperatures may lead to faster degradation.

Return Policy:

For MIRA Safety products, we adhere to the MIRA Safety return policy, prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of our customers above all else. Given the critical nature of the products we offer, and to ensure their integrity, we do not accept returns once items have shipped from our warehouse. Frequently Asked Questions

How does ChemTape enhance the protection of hazmat suits?

ChemTape enhances the protection of hazmat suits by sealing the vulnerable interfaces where the suit meets gloves, boots, and respirators. This helps create a more airtight environment, reducing the risk of exposure to chemical, biological, and particulate threats. While it significantly improves holdout against splashes and aerosols, it should not be solely relied upon for a liquid-tight seal. For comprehensive protection, ensure your PPE is compatible and properly fitted.

What are the limitations of using ChemTape for chemical protection?

While ChemTape provides excellent protection against splashes and aerosols, it should not be used as the primary barrier for liquid-tight sealing. Its main function is to reinforce existing protective gear by sealing gaps. The tape is effective for up to 8 hours against chemical warfare agents, but its performance is contingent on proper application. Users should always ensure that the tape is applied with adequate pressure to maintain adhesion.

How should ChemTape be applied to ensure maximum effectiveness?

For maximum effectiveness, ChemTape should be applied with a high degree of force to ensure the pressure-sensitive adhesive fully adheres to the surface. Before application, measure the area to be taped and use a single strip instead of multiple patches to avoid potential leaks. Ensure the tape is flat and free of wrinkles or folds, which can compromise its sealing ability.

Can ChemTape be used in conjunction with other PPE gear?

Yes, ChemTape is designed to be used with a variety of PPE gear, including level A, B, and C garments, as well as NFPA-rated suits. It is ideal for sealing the interfaces between different pieces of protective equipment, such as where a suit meets gloves or boots. This compatibility makes it a versatile addition to any emergency preparedness kit, especially for chemical threat scenarios.

What are the storage requirements for ChemTape?

ChemTape should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to maintain its protective properties. The ideal storage temperature is 73ºF (23ºC), but it can withstand temperatures up to 120ºF (49ºC) without significant degradation. Proper storage ensures the tape retains its adhesive strength and chemical resistance over time.

In what emergency scenarios is ChemTape most beneficial?

ChemTape is particularly beneficial in scenarios involving chemical spills, industrial accidents, and potential exposure to chemical warfare agents. It enhances the protective capabilities of PPE by sealing gaps that could allow hazardous substances to penetrate. In emergency preparedness, it is a crucial component for those working in environments with high chemical exposure risks.

How does ChemTape compare to other chemical-resistant tapes?

ChemTape is distinguished by its polyisoprene-based adhesive, providing superior adhesion and chemical resistance compared to many other tapes. It has been tested against a wide range of chemical threats, including nerve agents and mustard gas, ensuring a high level of protection. Its ease of use and compatibility with various PPE make it a preferred choice for many emergency responders.

Can ChemTape be used for non-emergency applications?

Yes, ChemTape can be used for non-emergency applications such as sealing pipes, repairing shelters, and marking areas due to its high-visibility yellow color. Its durability and strong adhesive properties make it suitable for various maintenance and repair tasks. However, users should be aware that its primary design is for chemical protection, and its effectiveness in other roles may vary.

What testing standards has ChemTape been subjected to?

ChemTape has been tested in accordance with ASTM F739, demonstrating a holdout time of at least 160 minutes against a battery of 15 liquids. Additionally, it has been tested per MIL-STD-282 against chemical warfare agents such as VX, Sarin, and Mustard, with a minimum holdout time of 8 hours. These rigorous testing standards ensure its reliability in high-risk environments.

How does ChemTape fit into a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan?

ChemTape is an essential component of a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan, particularly for those at risk of chemical exposure. It complements other PPE by sealing potential entry points for hazardous substances.
