What to look for

Choosing climbing and rescue gear

Look for the rating

Life-safety gear should carry UIAA or EN certification (NFPA for rescue). Utility clips and cord are not climbing-rated.

Dynamic vs. static rope

Dynamic rope stretches to absorb a fall; static rope is for rappelling, hauling and rescue systems.

Fit matters

Harnesses and helmets should fit snugly with the layers you climb in.

Retire worn gear

Inspect soft goods before every use and replace anything that has held a serious fall or shows damage.
