As more people head into the backcountry to explore and recharge, the importance of preserving our natural spaces becomes even more critical. Whether you’re hiking a weekend trail or camping deep in the wilderness, one rule should always guide your actions: Leave No Trace.
More than just a slogan, Leave No Trace is a set of outdoor ethics designed to minimize our impact on nature. It's not about being perfect—it’s about being mindful, prepared, and respectful of the land we enjoy.
What Is Leave No Trace?
Leave No Trace (LNT) is built on seven core principles developed by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. These guidelines help outdoor enthusiasts enjoy nature responsibly and sustainably.
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Know the regulations for the area you’re visiting
- Check the weather and terrain in advance
- Pack appropriately and avoid peak-use times if possible
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
- Stick to established trails and campsites
- Camp at least 200 feet from lakes and streams
- Avoid fragile ecosystems like alpine meadows
3. Dispose of Waste Properly
- Pack out all trash, leftover food, and litter
- Bury human waste in a cathole 6–8 inches deep, at least 200 feet from water sources
- Use biodegradable soap at least 200 feet from water sources
4. Leave What You Find
- Preserve the past: don’t touch cultural or historic structures
- Don’t pick flowers, remove rocks, or disturb wildlife habitats
- Take only pictures, leave only footprints
5. Minimize Campfire Impact
- Use a camp stove when possible
- If fires are permitted, use established fire rings and keep fires small
- Burn all wood to ash and scatter cooled ashes when done
6. Respect Wildlife
- Observe animals from a distance—do not approach or feed
- Store food securely to avoid attracting wildlife
- Control pets to avoid disturbing animals or ecosystems
7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors
- Keep noise levels down and respect trail etiquette
- Yield to other hikers and bikers on the trail
- Leave the area better than you found it
Why It Matters
Every year, thousands of trails, forests, and campsites suffer from trash, overuse, and careless behavior. Practicing Leave No Trace protects ecosystems, preserves scenic beauty, and ensures these spaces remain accessible for future generations. Whether you're solo camping, hiking with friends, or bringing your kids on their first backpacking trip—your choices matter.
